I am always struggling to find the words to describe that inexpressible urge I have to understand how we humans are deeply connected to a more-than-human world. How can we achieve a measure of balance and continuity rather than separation and dominance?
The meaning of nature is a cultural construction – influenced by a particular set of values and beliefs defined differently by all cultures. Here I re-collect from texts and cultures other than my own;
Each image of a human face with the eyes closed is a metaphor for “cultural blindness” symbolizing our detachment from nature. The drawings and text in each book all reference the significance of a particular culture’s symbiotic relationship between nature and humanity. I want to expand our idea of both the book and the photograph as recordkeepers; encompassing culture, history, and the personal as well as a compliment to memory. The images and forms I conceive act as a trace, a clue; always signaling somewhere else.
